Francis Bacon in Kunsthalle Bremen

Francis Bacons “Fragment of a Crucifixion” (1950) in the “Icons” exhibition in the @kunsthalle.bremen. The exhibition closed today, before I managed to get all my photos posted.

Every room in the museum was used for the exhibition, and each room showed just one work of art. Over 60 icons of modern art history were presented, exploring the question of what icons mean to us today. Most rooms were decorated in a way that complemented the work it showcased.

Irish born expressionist artist Francis Bacon had a turbulent live. For a large part of it he explored the tradition of the depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus, while being a professed atheist himself, and translated the images into a post-war modernist form. An iconic image used to depict more recent, but not less iconic, affairs.
