Lara Favaretto in Museum Voorlinden

Yes! After a two and a half months dry spell I finally got to go to a museum again today! And not just any one!

With museums opening up again this Monday (June 1st) one of my favorite museums in The Netherlands, Museum Voorlinden (@museumvoorlinden) kindly allowed for me to come and preview their new exhibition “Rendez-vous”. And what a rendez-vous it was. The exhibition is beautifully curated around the theme of meeting: visitors meeting the museum again, art works meeting other artworks and embracing each other, sometimes colliding, visitors meeting new works that weren’t on display before or reacquainting with old favorites.

The biggest room in the exhibition contained 4.000 kilograms of confetti, pressed together in 10 cubes measuring 90 x 90 x 90 cm. Italian artist Lara Favaretto (@lara_favaretto) created this work in 2018, with museum staff actually compressing the confetti in situ last week (publishing a great Instagram story of the process). The work is called “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”. The colors used for the confetti were derived from a scene in the movie Birdman.

The confetti is compressed in cubes without using any adhesive. Meaning the blocks will eventually crumble like ruins.

Museum Voorlinden will re-open on Monday 1 June with this exhibition, but also the excellent Momentum exhibition which I visited (and posted about) in January and February.
