I knew the work of Thomas Schütte from the funny Michelin-man-like statues in Museum De Pont (@de_pont_museum). Check #ThomasSchutteMuseumView to see them. I saw similar statues around the main staircase in the K21 location of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, and later encountered this room, with one statue and 3 metal shelves with a total of 36 ceramic studies.
The main sculpture is “Bronze Woman” (“Bronzefrau”) from 2001. The steel table is part of the work. The studies on the shelves behind it were made in 1999.
Schütte was from Düsseldorf and was taught – amongst others obviously – by Gerhard Richter, featured in my previous post from the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. I must admit I didn’t know this, but my hometown has a group of statues by Schütte in one of its municipal parks (!). I am definitely going to look those up a.s.a.p.
